In terms of COVID-19 testing, Novi Detroit Davison is the gold standard in Oakland County. The Shamrocks football team is the gold standard, too.
Davison is 9-0 and getting ready to lock horns with defending Division 1 state champion Rockford in a D1 Division 1 on Saturday. The school’s athletic department has been COVID-19 screening since the summer, so the state’s recently mandated testing procedures for the resumption of the football playoffs (after a two-month pause due to increasing pandemic numbers) has been relatively easy to adjust to.
“We’ve been in the (testing) process for a while now, we’ve done everything we’ve could to be as safe as possible,” Davison athletic director Aaron Babicz said. “These guys haven’t lost faith this entire time and it was easy to lose faith.”
Babicz reports positive energy coursing through the veins of the program as the Shamrocks prepare for their first trip to the Division 1 finals in three years.
“Morale is high and has been kept high by constant engagement,” he said. “The phone calls, Zoom meetings, virtual workouts all kept us focused, all the way back to March. We put ourselves at the head of the pack (unity, preparation, testing wise), it was inspiring. You could feel it at the first open workout in June. We can’t control the pandemic or what the MHSAA does. All we can do is plant our foot and pivot when called upon.”
Babicz is a Davison alum (Class of ’93) and former football star who played in college at Hillsdale. He helps Shamrocks head coach Dan Anderson run the program.
Davison has a high-powered offense led by junior quarterback Declan Byle and a reliable stable of wide receivers made up of senior Sam Dersa (Saginaw Valley State) and juniors Kam Davenport and Owen Semp. Central Michigan-commit Bruno Guberinich anchors the line and underclassmen Jackson Ewald, Braydon Courser and Baechler Houser fuel the linebacker corps.
The Shamrocks travel to Lapeer to face Rockford Saturday for the Division 1 championship game. Rockford (9-0), the No. 1 team in the state according to the Associated Press, will be without all-state field general Brendan Sullivan, already enrolled early at Northwestern. More
